North Carolina Lt Gov Refuses To Resign After Calling LGBTQ Community Filth
Mark Robinson, North Carolinaâs Republican lieutenant governor, dismissed a call for his resignation on Friday after he was exposed on videotape calling members of the LGBTQ community âfilth.â
Robinson said he stood by his homophobic comment and claimed to Raleigh NBC affiliate WRAL that right-wing speech was being âdemonized.â
AdvertisementâWe will not be intimidated. We will not back down. We will not change our language,â he said. âThe language I used, I am not ashamed of it. I will use it in the future because, again, it is time for parents in this state to take a strong stand for their children.â
Robinson made his offensive remarks while speaking in June at the Asbury Baptist Church in the town of Seagrove.
âIâm saying this now, and Iâve been saying it, and I donât care who likes it: Those issues have no place in a school. Thereâs no reason anybody anywhere in America should be telling any child about transgenderism, homosexuality â" any of that filth,â he said in a sermon at the church.
Robinson added: âAnd yes, I called it filth. And if you donât like it that I called it filth, come see me and Iâll explain it to you.â

Calling many of your own constituents "filth" means you have no intention of representing them.
Our Lt. Governor should resign and allow someone who is prepared to do the job to take his place.
This wasn't a dog whistle, folks. This was old school hate.https://t.co/uFDA9VzJA8
â" Sen. Jeff Jackson (@JeffJacksonNC) October 8, 2021An aide for Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper also issued a statement calling the remarks âabhorrent.â
âNorth Carolina is a welcoming state where we value public education and the diversity of our people. Itâs abhorrent to hear anyone, and especially an elected official, use hateful rhetoric that hurts people and our stateâs reputation,â said spokesperson Jordan Monaghan.
Robinson told WRAL on Friday that the governorâs opinion âmade no difference whatsoever.â
AdvertisementâI am tired of folks on the right being demonized for our speech,â he said, claiming that âfolks on the left burn, beat, rob, loot â" take over entire cities â" and get a pass.â
Robinson noted that he was not speaking at the church in his role as a public official. But he said that âhomosexuality and transgenderismâ are âagainst the tenets of my religionâ and have no place in public schools.
The video was posted on Twitter by Right Wing Watch, part of the progressive advocacy group People for the American Way.

â" Right Wing Watch (@RightWingWatch) October 6, 2021Robinsonâs comments were âliterally dangerousâ for members of the LGBTQ community, Allison Scott, director of impact and innovation for the Campaign for Southern Equality, told WRAL.
âWhether that is his meaning or not, it is his words that are actually painting the picture that we as a group should not exist. There are real impacts to words, and the real impacts are the damage and hurt in peopleâs lives,â Scott warned.
A spokesperson for Robinson initially attempted to soft-pedal his comments, saying they only âreferred to education.â
âTopics surrounding transgenderism and homosexuality should be discussed at home and not in public education,â spokesperson John Wesley Waugh said in an email to WRAL. âWe must focus on reading, writing, and mathematics in North Carolina.â
Waugh wrote that Robinson âaffirms every individualâs constitutional right to identify or express themselves in anyway they desire.â
