Welcome to Quick Q - Mondayâs Media weekly Q&A series dedicated to finding out more about the personalities that matter most in the Australian media landscape.
Every week The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age asks key figures across corporate media, business, sport, federal politics, radio, television and culture to answer a series of questions about their life, careers, hobbies and news habits.
This weekâs conversation is with Roy Joseph, who plays Harry in the new season of Australian comedy-drama Five Bedrooms, which is running on new streaming service Paramount+.

How did you get your big break?
When I was still at drama school, I got asked to audition for a role on an ABC comedy series called âBack In Very Small Businessâ. Someone Iâd met in my first year there was working for the casting agent (Nathan Lloyd) and suggested he look at me. I booked that role, and after months of radio silence, Nathan got me in again to an audition for Five Bedrooms. Here we are!
What are daily news media habits?
Iâm an avid user of the news app on my phone, so I try to check that a couple times a day. I also usually listen to the podcast â7amâ most days.
Which living person do you most admire?
I wouldnât say thereâs any one person I admire the most, but for the sake of this Iâll say Riz Ahmed. His acting work is incredible, and I really admire the way he speaks about representation (and basically, everything else) so clearly, concisely and directly in his interviews.
Your guilty streaming pleasure?
Currently... the Gossip Girl reboot. Itâs not good, but I just canât look away.
Which phrase do you overuse?
Grow up!
What did you want to do when you grew up?
It changed about every five minutes for most of my childhood, which makes sense for me now. From fairly young I knew I wanted to be an actor, though I was too embarrassed to admit it.
What was your first job?
Maccas, when I was 14. I feel like it was a rite of passage. I really saw some things.
Facebook or Instagram?
Instagram.
Recommend a podcast...
Goinâ Troppo. Oh and also Millennial Crises.
Whatâs one vice you wish you could give up?
Scrolling on Instagram.
The song thatâs always on high rotation?
Low Grade Buzz by Huntly. Theyâre an incredible Melbourne band that deserves a lot more attention!
What are you reading?
Dune. So good.
Favourite movie of the past decade?
I always struggle narrowing down to a single favourite, I love many films for different reasons⦠but Parasite is definitely up there. I didnât know a thing about the plot when I saw it, so I was taken on such a wild ride.
Top of your sporting bucket list?
To sit courtside at an NBA playoff final. I know thatâs probably not the type of sporting bucket list you were looking for, but thatâs what youâre getting!
Whatâs the best piece of advice youâve ever received?
My grandmother used to say not to eat while standing up because it would all go to my legs. I donât know how this advice is positioned or useful in my life now, but I love the absurdity of it. Maybe the advice was to sit down, take things slowly? She probably just wanted me to sit down.
What are the three things you couldnât live without?
My friends, my family, and my Spotify account.
Zoe Samios is a media and telecommunications reporter at The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.
